A logo, a vinyl cut or a laser engraving needs vectors, not pixels. Generated images can become clean vectors if you prepare them for it.
Tools
- Potrace: traces black-and-white bitmaps into smooth curves. Inkscape's Path > Trace Bitmap uses it.
- VTracer: traces colour images into layered shapes.
- Hathor Studio includes a vectorizer among its editing tools.
Prepare the image first
1. Generate for tracing: flat colour, bold shapes, no gradients, no texture. Prompt words such as flat vector illustration, solid colours, thick outlines, white background help.
2. Upscale before tracing (an ESRGAN upscale is fine); tracers work better on more pixels.
3. Reduce colours: posterise to 2-8 colours in an editor. Every extra colour becomes another layer of shapes.
4. Clean stray specks with an eraser or a despeckle filter.
Trace settings
- Potrace: raise the speckle suppression and corner smoothing for logos; lower them for detailed line art.
- VTracer: set the colour precision and filter speckle values; fewer colour layers means a cleaner file.
After tracing
- Simplify paths (Inkscape: Path > Simplify) and delete tiny shapes.
- Check node count. Thousands of nodes on a simple shape means the input was noisy.
- Replace any text with real type.
Post it
The input, the posterised version, the trace settings, and the result. The settings are what make it reproducible.
