Most "write my name in hieroglyphs" requests are built from the uniliteral (one-consonant) signs. Here they are with their Gardiner numbers and conventional transliteration. Egyptian writing does not record vowels, so a modern name is spelt by its consonants.
- G1 Egyptian vulture: ꜣ (glottal sound, often written "a" in names)
- M17 flowering reed: i
- D36 forearm: ꜥ (a guttural, written ' or a)
- G43 quail chick: w (also written as the coil Z7)
- D58 foot and leg: b
- Q3 stool: p
- I9 horned viper: f
- G17 owl: m
- N35 water ripple: n
- D21 mouth: r
- O4 reed shelter: h
- V28 twisted wick: ḥ
- Aa1 placenta (or sieve): ḫ
- F32 animal belly: ẖ
- O34 door bolt: z (also s)
- S29 folded cloth: s
- N37 pool: š (sh)
- N29 hill slope: q
- V31 basket with handle: k
- W11 jar stand: g
- X1 bread loaf: t
- V13 tethering rope: ṯ (tj)
- D46 hand: d
- I10 cobra: ḏ (dj)
Transliteration conventions
Egyptologists use the special letters above. For typing, the Manuel de Codage (MdC) uses ASCII: A for ꜣ, a for ꜥ, H for ḥ, x for ḫ, X for ẖ, S for š, T for ṯ, D for ḏ.
Arranging the signs
Egyptian is written in square groups (quadrats), not a single line, and can run left or right; signs face the start of the line. Unicode supports quadrats with format controls, but font and software support varies. For a design, arrange signs by hand in a vector editor.
