Who can renew online
The State Department's online renewal is for adults whose most recent passport:
- was issued when they were 16 or older,
- was issued within the last 15 years,
- is undamaged and in their possession,
and who are not changing their name or other personal details beyond what the system allows, and are not travelling internationally within the next several weeks. Check the eligibility list on travel.state.gov before starting; it is precise.
How it works
1. Create an account on the State Department's online renewal page.
2. Upload a digital photo that meets the passport photo rules (plain white or off-white background, no glasses, recent).
3. Pay the fee online. Fees are listed on travel.state.gov.
4. Your old passport is cancelled when you submit. You cannot use it while the new one is processed.
When not to use it
If you need the passport soon, do not apply online; use expedited service by mail or an appointment at a passport agency for urgent travel. Processing times are posted and change with the season; spring and early summer are the busiest.
A warning
Search results show third-party sites that charge extra to "help" with passport forms. The only official site is travel.state.gov. See https://scam-alert.soapbox.community for this and similar government-form scams.
