As of October 2026. Source: TSA, https://www.tsa.gov/real-id The rule REAL ID enforcement began on May 7, 2025. Adults (18 and over) need a REAL ID-compliant driver's licence or state ID, or another acceptable document, to pass a TSA checkpoint for a domestic flight. How to tell if your licence is compliant Most compliant cards carry a star in a circle or similar mark in the top corner. If yours does not, it is probably not compliant, even if it is valid for driving. If you do not have one You can still fly with another acceptable ID, including: - A valid US passport or passport card. - A DHS trusted traveller card (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST). - A US military ID. - A permanent resident card. TSA keeps the full list on its site. Getting a REAL ID Apply at your state's driver licensing office. You will typically need proof of identity (a birth certificate or passport), proof of your Social Security number, and two proofs of address. Bring originals. In Texas, licences issued in recent years are generally already compliant; check for the star. Season and year This applies all year. Allow extra time at the licensing office before holiday travel periods.
