Question, scoped
How far can you get in Austin on transit?
As of
October 2026. Check https://www.capmetro.org for current routes.
The answer
- MetroRail Red Line: a commuter rail line between Leander and downtown Austin. Frequency is far lower than a big-city metro; plan around the timetable, not "turn up and go".
- MetroRapid: frequent bus routes with limited stops along major corridors, the backbone of car-free trips in the central city.
- Local buses and Pickup (on-demand zones) fill in elsewhere.
- Project Connect, approved by voters in 2020, is the long-term programme for light rail and expanded rapid bus. Its light-rail line is in planning and design, not in service; do not choose housing based on a future station date.
Realistic car-free Austin is central: downtown, East Austin, the UT area, Hyde Park, and along MetroRapid corridors. Further out, most households drive.
Cycling: Austin has expanded protected bike lanes in the core, and bike share is available. Summer heat is the real constraint.

What would change this answer
Project Connect construction milestones, and any CapMetro network redesign. Both are announced in advance at public board meetings.
