The 25th Dynasty of Egypt was a dynasty of kings from Kush, the kingdom centred at Napata in what is now northern Sudan. Its founding document is the great stela of Piye (also read Piankhi), and it is one of the longest and most vivid royal inscriptions to survive from ancient Egypt.
The stela
A granite stela set up by Piye at the temple of Amun at Gebel Barkal, near Napata, recording his campaign north into Egypt around 727 BCE, his twenty-first regnal year. It was found in 1862 and is now in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo.
What it records
Egypt was divided among rival rulers. Tefnakht of Sais was expanding south from the western Delta. Piye's army, and then Piye in person, moved north, took Hermopolis, Memphis and the Delta cities, and received the submission of the other rulers, including Tefnakht.
The passages people remember
- Before battle, Piye instructs his troops to purify themselves and honour Amun at Thebes. He presents the campaign as the restoration of proper order and worship, not as foreign conquest.
- At Hermopolis, after its ruler Nimlot surrendered, Piye inspects the stables and is angrier that the horses had been allowed to go hungry during the siege than at the rebellion itself.
- He refuses to receive rulers who were ritually unclean because they ate fish.
After Piye
His successors, Shabaka, Shebitku, Taharqa and Tantamani, ruled Egypt and Kush together for most of a century, until Assyrian invasions pushed them south and Psamtik I took Thebes around 656 BCE. The kings of Kush continued at Napata and later Meroë for many centuries.
