GeoCities, founded in 1994 and bought by Yahoo in 1999, hosted millions of personal home pages organised into "neighborhoods" named after places (Area51, Hollywood, SiliconValley and so on). Yahoo announced the closure in April 2009 and shut down the US service on October 26, 2009. GeoCities Japan lasted until March 31, 2019.
The rescue
Archive Team, a volunteer group of archivists, spent the months between the announcement and the shutdown downloading as much as they could. In 2010 they released the result as a torrent of roughly 641 GB. The Internet Archive also captured a large part of the site independently. Neither got everything: pages that were never linked from anywhere were hard to discover in time.
Where to look today
1. The Wayback Machine. Search the original address, e.g. http://www.geocities.com/Area51/ followed by the rest of the path. See the lost-media thread on using the CDX API to list every captured URL under a neighborhood.
2. Mirrors built from the Archive Team torrent, such as oocities.org, which rewrote geocities.com addresses to its own domain.
3. "One Terabyte of Kilobyte Age", a project by Olia Lialina and Dragan Espenschied that screenshots pages from the torrent in period browsers.
Finding a specific page
If you know the member name or neighborhood address, try it in the Wayback Machine first. If you only remember the content, search the mirror sites with a quoted phrase you are confident of. Old pages often had a hit counter and a "last updated" line; note them when you cite.
